Blues guitar is often defined by its light, natural-sounding distorted crunch and a pleasant, round tone. You’ll also need to use the natural expressiveness of the guitar to be able to play both softly and loudly during a blues song, and so I always recommend blues musicians going for a tube amp. Set your gain right where you can play lightly for a nice, clean tone, but where you’ll also get some tasty, soulful distortion when you dig into a note. If you’re getting a tube amp, I’d recommend getting something with a lower wattage so you can crank the gain right on the amp and use its natural distortion settings (no need for fancy pedals in the blues).

First, always provide your mastering engineer with a mix output file that is a high quality audio file, meaning a WAV or AIFF file at 24-bit or higher resolution and, preferably, at 48kHz or higher sample rate.

Dead J is one of the most innovative and prolific electronic musicians making music in China. His music is dancy, crunchy, sonically diverse, and all-together banging. He was originally inspired to make electronic music because he felt that rock music had stagnated. “One of the charming things about electronic music is its individualism,” according to Dead J, “just like when an artist creates a painting by themselves. So the possibilities for electronic musicians are huge.”  I highly recommend his new album, Ting Tai Le Ge.

It may sound corny or cliché, it may sound like bad advice at first, but “fake it til you make it” is one of the core tennets of visualizing your success.

As a new songwriter, the many varieties of songform might come naturally to you, or it might be a goal that you’re shooting to improve on. But luckily, while there are a ton of models out there for how songs are made to function, there are no hard and fast rules — which means you’re free to learn what tools you need, and then bend them to suit your songwriting practice.

Whether you’re a vocalist learning to sight sing from sheet music or an instrumentalist working on transcribing songs, arranging for an ensemble, or even composing new musical material, learning to identify intervals by ear can be useful across almost any situation. Plus, if you can identify intervals by ear, who needs perfect pitch?

Takada’s debut LP has just been rereleased in the US by Palto Flats and in Europe by WRWTFWW Records, pressed to vinyl for only the second time in 34 years, to meet its overwhelming demand. In the years since this record has been streamable online, original copies of the LP have sold for as much as $1,000. Takada, herself, is newly represented internationally and touring festivals to sold-out audiences. I even bought my copy of the LP last week and feel, well, awesome about it!

There are lots of reasons why tuning is hard. You might be hampered by a poorly made guitar, or by a guitar that’s not set up correctly, or by old, worn-out strings, or by changes in temperature or humidity, or just by a lack of patience or time. At least you can be secure in the knowledge that some of your tuning struggles are due to the basic unfairness of the universe, and not just the limitations of your ears or your equipment.

As we can see, the scales which are used the most in the Western musical system (the ones commonly called Major and Minor scales) are the modes built on the first and sixth degrees of a Major scale.

And while I’m on a food/beverage aside, La Cumbre Brewing Co. is a great local brewery that serves my favorite beer (Slice of Hefen; which actually is a slice of heaven) and just has a nice vibe about it. You’re guaranteed to make a friend here. It’s not too loud or stand-offish and they play excellent music.
